How to unlock characters in Blood Dungeon

Bunkmates are not bought. Each one arrives attached to an achievement of the same name, and that achievement’s description is the thing you have to do. Three of the nine have a condition anyone can read off Steam today — here they are, with the share of players who have already done it.

The short answer

  • Skinja Avoid damage for 2:00. 60.3% of players have done it· named on the store page
  • Leggy Kill 50 spiders. 64.4% of players have done it· named on the store page
  • Bug Stay airborne for 5 sec. 8.1% of players have done it· named on the store page
  • Baby — an achievement carries the name, but a second official line assumes you are already playing as Baby. The two cannot both be read the way every other entry here is read, so this page states no Baby condition; both lines are laid out below.
  • Bunkmates 59 5 characters with no public name and therefore no public condition.

Where these conditions come from

Messhof has not published an unlock list. What exists is the achievement list, and on it the name is the thing you receive while the description is the condition — which is why Leggy | Kill 50 spiders looks like a spreadsheet with its columns swapped.

That reading is a claim, so we test it instead of asserting it. If a name really is a reward, then any achievement whose description mentions another achievement must be rarer than the one it mentions. Across the 16 such pairs on the current list, 16 hold that way. The figure is computed on every build, so if the pattern ever breaks this paragraph says so on its own.

2 further achievements make it explicit that these names are playable characters rather than items: Extra Choice (Reach level 5 as Skinja) Lucky Chests (Reach level 15 as Baby) — you cannot reach a level as someone unless that someone is playable.

The three conditions, and what they ask

Skinja

60.3% of players

Avoid damage for 2:00 — read it twice, because it does not say survive two minutes. It says avoid damage for them, and those are different asks.

The store page also tells you what Skinja does once you have them — that sentence is quoted in full further down.

Leggy

64.4% of players

Kill 50 spiders — spiders are one enemy family among the hundred-plus the store page advertises. The condition names a count and nothing else: no arena, no time limit, no single-run wording, unlike Skinja’s two-minute clock.

The store page also tells you what Leggy does once you have them — that sentence is quoted in full further down.

Bug

8.1% of players

Stay airborne for 5 sec — the rarest of the three by a wide margin: 8.1% against 60.3% for the next one up. What Steam does not tell you is why so few manage five seconds of air, and we are not going to invent a method.

The store page also tells you what Bug does once you have them — that sentence is quoted in full further down.

Baby: the one that does not resolve

Two achievements mention Baby, and under the reading used everywhere else on this site they contradict each other.

Baby

Buy 10 items at the Bone Shop

Read as reward-plus-condition, this hands you Baby for buying ten things at the Bone Shop.

Lucky Chests

Reach level 15 as Baby

This one assumes you already are Baby, which the first card says you only become after ten purchases.

Both lines are official Steam text. The conflict is in our decoding, not in the data — so this page does not declare a Baby unlock condition. If you have watched Baby appear in your own game, that first-hand account beats everything above and we would rather print it than a guess.

What the Bone Shop and the Dogmancer actually sell

A fair assumption is that bones buy characters. The published sources do not support it. Messhof’s own store copy says: Visit the Dogmancer to pay the bone toll and unlock permanent upgrades. — permanent upgrades, not roster slots.

Press bones are traded to the Dogmancer for permanent passive upgrades — movement speed, base damage and jump.

WayTooManyGames, 2026-08-26 — a reviewer’s account of their own runs, not a developer statement.

The Bone Shop still matters to this page for one reason: it is named in the Baby achievement above, which is the only place a character name and the shop appear in the same sentence anywhere official. A launch hotfix also confirms the shop’s upgrades interact with daily runs — Messhof listed “get your boneshop powers back after finishing a daily run” among the fixes on 26 August 2026.

The 5 we cannot name

Nine exist; four have names in public sources. The remaining 5 have neither a name nor a condition, and inventing either would be the easiest paragraph on this site to write and the only one that would be worthless.

Press the roster includes “a pistol-shooting baby and a naked swordsman” — a description of two characters, not names for them.

But Why Tho?, 2026-08-24. A description is not a name, and we are not turning it into one.

Where a name would come from next: a datamine, a Messhof post, or the achievement list growing. That list is re-read on every build of this site, so a new name lands here without anyone editing this page.

After the unlock: the 54-clear finish line

Unlocking a bunkmate is the cheap half. Bunkhouse asks you to “beat every level with every character from the bunkhouse”, and 0.3% of players have it — the rarest entry on the whole list. That is 9 characters against the 6 arenas the achievement list names — whether the game holds more than those six is itself unanswered, which is why the grid below is sized from the data rather than from a claim about completeness.

The official sentences, in full

Unlock nine bunkmates, each with their own weapon of choice and movement perks. Spin climbable webs as Leggy, take flight with Bug, or speed through the Dungeons as only a Skinja can.

Feature list, verbatim: “9 unlockable playable characters with different traits and weapons” · “Over 100 quests to complete” · “Daily dungeons”.

Quests and character unlocks are two separate bullets. Nothing published connects them, so neither do we.

Questions people actually type

How do you unlock characters in Blood Dungeon?
Each bunkmate arrives with a Steam achievement of the same name, and the achievement description is the condition. Skinja is awarded for avoiding damage for two minutes, Leggy for killing 50 spiders and Bug for staying airborne for five seconds. The store page confirms there are nine bunkmates in total. Four have a public name; three of those four have a condition you can read straight off the achievement list, and the fourth, Baby, is contradicted by a second official line, so no condition is claimed for it here.
Does the Bone Shop unlock characters?
No source says it does. Messhof’s own store copy ties the Dogmancer and the bone toll to "permanent upgrades", and reviewers who spent bones describe movement speed, damage and jump upgrades. Bones are a meta-progression currency, not a character shop, as far as anything published shows.
How many characters does Blood Dungeon have?
Nine. The Steam store page says "9 unlockable playable characters with different traits and weapons", and the achievement Bunkhouse asks you to beat every level with every character from the bunkhouse — that is 54 separate clears across 6 arenas.
Do quests unlock bunkmates?
Unknown. The store page lists "Over 100 quests to complete" and character unlocks as two separate feature bullets, and no public source connects the two. We are not going to invent the connection just because the page would read better with one.
